Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX, ETR:NFC) has been slapped with a €4.75 million
($4.98 million) fine by The Dutch Data Protection Authority after not
adequately informing customers over personal data usage.
Consumers were not properly informed about how the streaming service
used their personal data between 2018 and 2020, the watchdog said on
Wednesday.
Netflix had been placed under investigation in 2019 over the data issues,
which were found to breach rules granting European Union citizens rights
around the use of their information.
“Netflix did not inform customers clearly enough in its privacy statement
about what exactly Netflix does with those data,” the authority noted.
“Furthermore, customers did not receive sufficient information when they
asked Netflix which data the company collects about them.
“These are violations of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).”
Digital rights organisation noyb.eu had initially complained over Netflix’s
data usage information.
Netflix has since updated its privacy statement but objected to the fine by
the watchdog.
